Priority given to DFLL juniors (3rd year).
No freshmen or sophomores will be accepted.
This course offers an introduction to the poetry and prose of the Romantic period with close attention to the literary text. Major poets to be studied include Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats; works in prose include Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and short selections by Lamb, Hazlitt, and de Quincey. Emphasis will be placed on the complex literary and philosophical questions raised by Romantic writers and the influence of post-Enlightenment thought on modernity. Students considering this course should be prepared for a certain degree of abstract thinking and interpretive difficulty. Lectures will be conducted in English. |
